Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 07/09/2023

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Romans

Key Text: Romans 6:1-7

Description:

Avg Guy: I believe you could argue that sinning is ultimately good!

SBC Host: That’s a pretty big statement. What do you mean?

Avg Guy: Well, we are saved apart from our works, right?

SBC Host: Right.

Avg Guy: And since we know that “when sin increases grace abounds all the more”… It’s obvious the law is now obsolete.

SBC Host: I’m not sur—

Avg Guy:It’s simple: More sin equals more grace! And who wouldn’t want more grace?? Ergo, sin is good. I rest my case.

SBC Host: Careful. Your line of thinking will not end well.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and shows us that this twisted thinking challenged the Gospel.

Man was turning grace into a license to sin — distorting the God’s Word and corrupting many in the church.

In our passage, Paul responds to these challenges to show the impossibility of such a view — using our union with Christ to show how such an idea would be simply absurd.

Questions:

The following are questions to help you think about the sermon, as well as offer a set of discussion questions for family worship, or gathering together in other settings. My prayer is that these questions will allow you to dwell longer, and meditate more, upon God’s holy Word and will be fodder for sanctifying conversations. — M.S.

  1. Compare Romans 6:1 with 5:12-21, especially 5:20-21.  What is the connection between 5:12-21 and Chapter 6?
  2. What is our relationship, as Christians, to sin? (6:1-2)
  3. What does it mean that we were baptized into Christ’s death? (6:3-5)
  4. Paul previously tied together Justification and Glorification, which marks the beginning and end of the application of Christ’s work.  How does Chapter 6 relate to the doctrine of sanctification?
  5. What is baptism compared to or a picture of?
  6. Christians have differing views of the form of water baptism (sprinkling, pouring, immersion).   Explain what v4 teaches on the subject and which one of these forms captures what Paul envisions here in Romans 6.
  7. According to verse 4, what does Christ’s resurrection bring about in the life of the Christian?
  8. What does being born again have to do with baptism?  Does baptism produce being born again or symbolize it?
  9. Explain the significance of “walk” in verse 4.  What does it mean to “walk” in the newness of life?
  10. Explain the connection between baptism and Jesus’ death and resurrection (6:4-5)
  11. What is pictured happening to sin in baptism and what conclusion ought this to lead to? (6:6-7)
  12. What does this show about the purpose of baptism?
