Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Advent

Key Text: Genesis 3:1-21

Description:

Advent — a time of reflection and anticipation.

Today, Christmas Eve morning, on the Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao delves into the story that changed the course of humanity: God’s perfect creation and the entrance of sin into all that He had made.

This story is not just about the first sin, though, it’s a mirror reflecting our own struggles, hopes, and the profound need for redemption.

Because when all that Adam and Eve ought to have expected was God’s wrath, in the midst of Almighty’s curse was (and is) a promise of a Savior to come.

So even as sin entered the world, hope also entered with the promise of Jesus the Savior who would crush the head of the serpent once and for all.

Questions:

The following are questions to help you think about the sermon, as well as offer a set of discussion questions for family worship, or gathering together in other settings. My prayer is that these questions will allow you to dwell longer, and meditate more, upon God’s holy Word and will be fodder for sanctifying conversations. — M.S.

  1. What is the first recorded question in all of Earth’s history and how does this question attack the authority of God?
  2. Martin Luther warned us that, “The devil’s main weapon against Christians is his amazing ability to turn law into gospel and gospel into law.”  How does this passage illustrate Luther’s warning and how are we susceptible to this strategy of deceit in our own lives?
  3. Satan asks, “Has God said…?”  How does this question challenge God’s word?
  4. Eve is left needing to either believe God’s word or the devil’s word.  How is this competing message still prevalent today?
  5. Satan attacks God’s character in verse 5.  How does this attack relate to God’s purposeful design for humanity as His image bearer?
  6. Satan says that to be truly free, Adam and Eve must rebel against God (he paints God as a tyrant).  What will truly set us free and why is Satan’s lie so tempting to believe after the fall?
  7. Eve was deceived by the serpent?  Did Adam fall in the same way?  Why or why not?  (hint: 1 Tim. 2:14)
  8. How does fallen man continue to “sew fig leaves together to cover our nakedness”?  Fig leaves are a type of W______ R___________.  How does Romans 3:19-26 relate to what fig leaves represent? Can fig leaves cover our shame?  What fig leaves do we try to sew together today?
  9. How does the story of Adam and Eve’s temptation in Genesis 3:1-21 mirror our own experiences with temptation?
  10. What are some of the immediate and long-term consequences of Adam and Eve’s sin as shown in this passage? How do these consequences relate to our lives today?
