Is the Reformation Over? [selected texts]

October 31, 2010

Sermon Notes

Date: 10/31/2010

Preacher: Monty Simao, elder

Series: Reformation Sunday

Key Text: selected texts

Description: October 31 has historically been celebrated in the church as Reformation Day yet most Christians don’t even know that Reformation Day exists — to them, October 31 is simply Halloween. We have forgotten the great men who risked their lives for the sake of the gospel and have left us a legacy of Christian freedom and who God used to recovered the gospel of grace.  In today’s sermon we answer the question “Is the Reformation over?” and explore the five solas which function as the pillars of Reformation doctrine.

Notes:

The 5 Solas

  1. Sola Scriptura (“by Scripture Alone”)
  2. Sola Fide (“by Faith Alone”)
  3. Sola Gratia (“by Grace Alone”)
  4. Solus Christus or Solo Christo (“Christ Alone” or “through Christ Alone”)
  5. Soli Deo Gloria (“Glory to God Alone”)

Faith and Works

  • Roman Catholic View: Faith + Works → Justification
  • Reformation View: Faith → Justification + Works

The Formula

Scripture Teaches: Salvation is by Grace alone, through Faith alone, in Christ alone, to God’s Glory alone!

October 10, 2010

Sermon Notes

Date: 10/10/2010

Preacher: Monty Simao, elder

Series: Ephesians

Key Text: Ephesians 3:14-16a

Description:  This sermon covers the introduction to Paul’s apostolic prayer for the Ephesian believers. Paul’s reasons for praying for the Ephesians are found in chapter two of the epistle as Paul teaches about the unity of Christ’s church. Paul now prays that the Ephesians understand these great truths. Many of these truths are ones that Paul struggled in understanding until confronted by the resurrected Lord. We will answer the following questions in this message:

  1. Why is Paul Praying?
  2. How does Paul Pray?
  3. To Whom does Paul Pray?
  4. According to what does Paul Pray?
