as Jesus teaches His disciples
not merely how to pray,
[Give us this day our daily bread.]
but how to live each day
[Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.]
in complete dependence
upon their Father in heaven —
[And do not lead us into temptation.]
These are not the prayers
of the self-sufficient.
They are the petitions of children
who know the Father —
the One who provides,
forgives,
and faithfully guards them
when temptation comes.
