Date: 02/05/2023

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Acts 6:1-7; 1 Timothy 3:8-13

Description:

When looking at the structure of the Church, you can’t help but come across the diaconate — deacons.

But just what is a deacon?

Why are they needed?

And what do they do??

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao takes a necessary break in our study in the book of Romans to further our understanding of deacons — because this morning we’re installing not one, but two!

We’ll see that while the deacon certainly plays a special role in the Church, their role isn’t far off from ours:

the emulation of Christ, Himself.

Questions:

The following are questions to help you think about the sermon, as well as offer a set of discussion questions for family worship, or gathering together in other settings. My prayer is that these questions will allow you to dwell longer, and meditate more, upon God’s holy Word and will be fodder for sanctifying conversations. — M.S.

  1. What was the initial situation in Acts chapter 6 that prompted the appointment of 7 men to serve as deacons?  And what does this tell you about Christ and the church?
  2. Why do you think that these 7 men needed to be of good reputation, and full of the Spirit and wisdom if there were just overseeing the distribution of food?  In other words, why do character and godliness matter?
  3. What dangers arise when a church emphasizes spiritual needs and neglects physical needs or emphasizes physical needs but neglects spiritual needs?
  4. Why do you think Paul gives qualifications for deacon’s wives?
  5. Is there anything extraordinary about the qualifications of deacons and their wives from other Christians?
  6. When speaking about the duties of a deacon – what do we mean when we say that a deacon’s head must be on a swivel, and without deacons having this attitude how would the church be affected?
  7. What are ways that a deacon could safeguard and foster church unity and how can other believers follow this example?
  8. How do deacons support the ministry of the elders of a church and what would happen to a church without deacons doing this work?
