Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Genesis

Key Text: Genesis 42

Description: It’s been 20 years, and Joseph finally gets to see his brothers again.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and shows us that this time the situation is quite different for Joseph: he now sits on the throne as the highest ranking official of Egypt, and his brothers – not recognizing him as the very brother they sold into slavery – are bowing at his feet.

SBC logo 204x204

What is Joseph to do??? Should he trust them after what they did? Should he sentence them to imprisonment… or worse? And, more importantly, how will he know – if after 20 years – they have changed?

Description: Out of all the chapters in the book of Genesis, forty-one can be argued to be the most pivotal… but it is also the most misunderstood.

Gen 41: Most Pivotal… Most Misunderstood

SBC logo 204x204

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and explains that when we incorrectly interpret Genesis 41, we see how a faithful man can climb the corporate ladder.  But, when we correctly interpret Genesis 41, we see how to remain faithful to a sovereign God and to set our eyes on a kingdom that is not of this world.

“Do not interpretations belong to God?”

This was the question the imprisoned Joseph asked his two cellmates when they awoke saddened, not being able to make sense of the dreams they just had.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis to illuminate the significance that this small glimpse into Joseph’s life tells us. It tells us that in even in the midst of betrayal, kidnapping, slavery, and now imprisonment … Joseph’s faith was still in God – the same God who sees every injustice and who is always in control.

God was with Joseph [Genesis 39:1-23]

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 04/08/2018

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Genesis

Key Text: Genesis 39

Description: Genesis chapter 39 oftentimes is looked at as an example of how blessings can come to those who act righteously. But is that really what this chapter is here to show us?

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and points out that when we remember Joseph’s success came to him as a slave, and then later as a prisoner, it kind of changes our perspective.

What does it mean to be a successful slave or a successful prisoner?SBC logo 204x204

Perhaps God’s intent with Genesis chapter 39 is to teach us something different. Perhaps we are to understand that He is in control and that no matter what life brings – from slavery to imprisonment – we can bear it. Because, just as God was with Joseph, He is with us as well.

Why Did Jesus Need to Die? [Romans 3:23-24]

April 1, 2018

Sermon Notes

Date: 04/01/2018, Easter Sunday

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Romans 3:23-24

Description:

Why did Jesus go to the cross?

There are many reasons that Jesus went to the cross. There are human reasons such as Judas Iscariot betraying Him and the Sanhedrin wanting to kill him. …But those reasons see the cross from the perspective of man of things that happened to Jesus – they don’t ultimately answer the question “why.” Because obviously, He had escaped the grasp of evil men before.

SBC logo 204x204Today on our Easter Sunday Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao rightfully sharpens our thinking on this question and shows us that the cross wasn’t just a thing that happened …it was necessary. Jesus didn’t just go to the cross, He needed to go to the cross…He needed to die. For that was His purpose in taking on flesh. So perhaps a better question we need to ask is “Why did Jesus need to die?”

The King Has Come [Luke 19:28-42]

March 25, 2018

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 03/25/2018, Palm Sunday

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Luke 19:28-42

Description: Jesus had just raised Lazarus from the dead, and the crowds were following Him as He descended into the royal city of Jerusalem – the King had arrived!

Today on this Palm Sunday, Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao takes us to the book of Luke to show us that as Jesus entered the city, the crowds cheered and lined the road with their coats and branches as they waved palms in the air in celebration of His arrival.  SBC logo 204x204

…But soon the cheering would stop.  Soon the “hosannas” would be replaced with “Crucify him!” – and for this, while the crowds shouted, Jesus wept.

Judah’s Shame [Genesis 38:1-28]

SBC frame line - current sermons

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 03/18/2018

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Genesis

Key Text: Genesis 38

Description:

Average Guy: Okay, so we’re reading through Genesis, and we’re in the middle of Joseph’s gripping story. And then all of a sudden the story just stops.  …And we start talking about things that I can’t believe are even in the Bible!!! …the dirty laundry of Judah – full of lust and deception. Why???

Scandia Host: Good question – because on the surface it does seem a bit disjointed. Not to worry, though, Joseph’s narrative will resume shortly. …But to begin to even understand why the wicked actions of Joseph’s older brother, Judah, are on display here, we need to step back and remember that on a deeper level this is part of the story – and God is the storyteller.

SBC logo 204x204Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis where, indeed, the narrative of the chronicles of Joseph take a seemingly sudden break to cast light on a section of scripture that is outright scandalous – a section of scripture that, honestly, we’d just rather skip. In it Judah’s heart springs forth actions that are both repulsive and shameful. Certainly our Lord and Savior deserves a better forefather than him. But it is in this darkness that our Lord’s grace abounds. For if God did not use sinful people to bring about His glory and purposes, He’d have no one to use. And it is in this moment that we realize that we are no better than Judah.

Sermon Notes

Date: 03/11/2018

Preacher: Vasiliy Kaletnik, missionary

Key Text: 2 Corinthians 5:17-20

Description:

Scandia Host: If you are in Christ, you have been called to be a missionary.

Average Guy: I’m not a missionary??? I’m just sitting here in the pew.

Scandia Host: I get it. You better listen up though.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, we welcome back to our pulpit – after an eight year hiatus – Scandia Bible Church supported, missionary and brother in Christ, Vasiliy Kaletnik (of abwe.org)… who for nearly 30 years – since the fall of the USSR – has been preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the very poor and landlocked Eastern European country of Moldova. For all intents and purposes, he’s a modern day circuit preacher, preaching at five different churches during the week and three on Sunday – making disciples and baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

SBC logo 204x204

Following Brother Vasiliy, Pastor Monty echoes a short sermon… that no matter where we are in the world – whether it be in Moldova or Poulsbo – we, as Christians, are all missionaries: we share the same calling, same message, and serve the same Lord with Christ as the head.

SBC logo 204x204Description: God often uses things in our life to prepare us for a road that He will have us walk.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis in which we see God preparing Joseph – Jacob’s second youngest son, who’s now 17 years old – for the trials that await him. God sends Joseph dreams that we all know will one day encourage his heart, but presently seem to do nothing but drive a wedge of further bitterness into his already divided family.

It’s in the trials we face, though, that God’s gracious hand leads us every step of the way, not only during – but as we’ll learn – before.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao returns to the pulpit – after having been away himself for a time to mourn the loss of his son, Isaiah.

He continues with our study in the book of Genesis and reminds us that when it comes to pleasure and pain, most things in life are a mixture of the two. But take note: God is not only with us in our pleasure, He too is with us in our pain… and He proves sufficient for all that He brings into our life.

Sacrifice of Praise [Hebrews 13:15]

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 12/17/2017

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Hebrews 13:15

SBC logo 204x204Description:

Scandia Host: Sacrifice and Praise.

Average Guy: Wait a minute are we playing a game of opposites?

Scandia Host: No, but I can see what you mean. Because “sacrifice” sounds somber and costly.

Average Guy: –And “praise” sounds joyful… and a lot easier than “sacrifice.”

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao takes to the pulpit once again – following the fresh sting of the sudden loss of his son – and points out that when it comes to these two words, it’s not always one or the other, for the author of Hebrews tells us that we are to offer a sacrifice of praise. In fact, much of the New Testament describes the Christian life as the intersection between these two terms, where they not only meet but become intertwined into the very warp and woof of what it means to be a Christian.

God of Comfort [Psalm 119:1-176]

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 12/03/2017

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Psalm 119

SBC logo 204x204Description: Psalm 119. It’s not a Psalm we usually go to when looking for comfort, but, ironically, it has more to say about comfort and affliction than any other Psalm.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues to preach in the aftermath of his son’s tragic death and points out that when you see a passage of affliction in the Bible, take heart in knowing that you are not far from comfort — for this pattern, of passages of comfort following passages of affliction, occurs over and over again… in almost every instance. God is the God of all comfort, and He comforts the afflicted.

When it comes to Psalm 119,  we often categorize it as a Psalm about the beauty of God’s word and statutes, but what we’ll find is that, consequently, it is also a Psalm about God’s great comfort.

For in this passage we are reminded that even the patriarchs failed and compromised, and that, shamefully, as it happened, the sons of Israel missed the beauty of the covenant that was right before them – turning, instead, what God called sacred into what could only be described as savage.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao takes a moment to recognize this significant milestone in church history: the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Indeed, the reformers of yesteryear have left us with a great body of knowledge about God and the church and the state of man; but it leaves us wondering if any tasks remain.
