Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Romans

Key Text: Romans 8:5-11

Description:

What you set your mind on matters.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and preaches that when you go at it on your own — apart from God — you are driven by the flesh. Consequently, your mind is set on the carnal, fleshly aspects of life.

…And lest you think it’s working out, the Bible instructs, it does not end well:

“For the mind set on the flesh is DEATH.…”

SBC logo 204x204

But when you live your life transformed by Christ, you can’t help but set your mind above, on the Spirit — which ends very well:

“…For the mind set on the Spirit is LIFE and PEACE.…”

Failures. Failures we all too easily relate to.

Today on Scanida Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and points out that with Paul describing his ongoing battle with sin in chapter 7 and the shortcomings he’s experienced because of it, we’d expect to see a judgement against it in chapter 8.

SBC logo 204x204Instead, right at the beginning, what we see is one of the most triumphant announcements in all of Scripture:

“Therefore there is now no condemnation in Christ Jesus.”

Description:

The BATTLE is REAL.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans in which Paul addresses, in chapter 7, the very real internal struggle that Christian believers experience everyday: the battle between the desires of the flesh and the desires of the Spirit.

SBC logo 204x204

Yes we live in a Romans 7 world… but it is equally true that we live in a Romans 8 world where victory is certain.

But until then, life will be marked by battle and this battle will never lighten up… until we are called home or the Lord comes again.

Like a sleeping dragon, sin reclines guarding its hoard.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and explains that without the law…

Men lie at ease.

Their consciences are at rest.

They think good of themselves.

SBC logo 204x204

But then the law comes in and rouses the dragon — turning what was once seemingly peaceful to unleashed fury.

For the more Law reveals, the more Dragon reveals… its true character.

Whom do you serve?

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and poses this question.

Because while it’s not uncommon for an unbeliever to see themselves as living in freedom while Christians submit themselves to bondage, the Bible paints a different picture.

SBC logo 204x204

For the one you serve is your master.

If you serve sin, you are enslaved to sin… and your path leads to death.

If you serve righteousness, you are freed from sin… and, instead, enslaved to God who gives eternal life.

Your choice.

Key Text: Romans 6:8-14

Description:

LEGALISM.

It’s attractive because it stresses obedience to the law. It’s weak because the law is unable to help us in our plight.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and shares how Paul had been accused of preaching a gospel that encouraged immoral living — for some lived as if sin still reigned in their lives.

But that was not what Paul was doing at all!

SBC logo 204x204

Rather than encouraging loose living, Paul preached the gospel of GRACE.

For grace is able to do what the law cannot:

Grace gives desire and will to obey…and power to the once powerless.

Dead to Sin. Alive to God. [Romans 6:1-7]

SBC frame line - current sermons

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 07/09/2023

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Romans

Key Text: Romans 6:1-7

Description:

Avg Guy: I believe you could argue that sinning is ultimately good!

SBC Host: That’s a pretty big statement. What do you mean?

Avg Guy: Well, we are saved apart from our works, right?

SBC Host: Right.

Avg Guy: And since we know that “when sin increases grace abounds all the more”… It’s obvious the law is now obsolete.

SBC Host: I’m not sur—

Avg Guy:It’s simple: More sin equals more grace! And who wouldn’t want more grace?? Ergo, sin is good. I rest my case.

SBC Host: Careful. Your line of thinking will not end well.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and shows us that this twisted thinking challenged the Gospel.

SBC logo 204x204

Man was turning grace into a license to sin — distorting the God’s Word and corrupting many in the church.

In our passage, Paul responds to these challenges to show the impossibility of such a view — using our union with Christ to show how such an idea would be simply absurd.

Avg Guy: It’s so unfair… Adam ruined everything!!

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and invites us to ponder a question that has remained with church history for 2000 years:

Why is it that we are guilty, even before we have done anything wrong ourselves?

SBC logo 204x204

For our understanding of this exact question forms the basis of our understanding of, not only Original Sin but, the gospel itself.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans asking:

“Have you ever doubted God’s love for you?”

SBC logo 204x204

Many sincere Christians have… wondering if He has reached the end of His grace.

But our questioning doubts should be quenched and Gospel-filled answers, provided… when we consider the way in which God demonstrated his love in the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ.

Justification and Its Results [Romans 5:1-5]

June 11, 2023

SBC frame line - current sermons

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 06/11/2023

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Romans

Key Text: Romans 5:1-5

Description:

We have a great NEED — and, by His grace — a great SAVIOR.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and points to this sobering and magnificent reality that Paul has written about.

For we know that Christ saves us “by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone,” but even so, we may not yet see some of the practical results of this justification by faith alone.

SBC logo 204x204

In our passage, the Apostle Paul masterfully connects our theology with practical living and shows us the path that God has laid out for Christian growth.

What we’ll find is that through correct doctrine, we have the proper lens in which to view the world, especially in the face of life’s difficulties.

Faith and Promise [Romans 4:13-25]

SBC frame line - current sermons

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 06/04/2023

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Romans

Key Text: Romans 4:13-25

Description:

Faith does not create… rather, it receives.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and shows us how with Abraham, Paul provides a case study concerning faith.

Every circumstance in Abraham’s life defied the promises of God, and yet Abraham defied the circumstances… and believed God — and God credited him with righteousness.

SBC logo 204x204

While our story may not seem as grand, this is our story as well:

The promises of God, given; the circumstances of life attempt to defy; and yet, He is faithful. And… we believe God.

Abraham Justified by Grace [Romans 4:1-12]

May 21, 2023

SBC frame line - current sermons

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 05/21/2023

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Romans

Key Text: Romans 4:1-12

Description:

If there was ever any counterargument to the doctrine of Justification by Faith Alone, the Jews need only point to their forefather Abraham. After all, he was the first and great patriarch. He was even recognized as the “friend of God.” If anybody had a resume of “works” to gain justification, he did.

But, he didn’t.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and shows us how Paul masterfully reminds the reader that the justification God provides has nothing to do with what what Abraham did, or what we do, for God. It’s about what GOD DID for Abraham… and what GOD DOES for us.

SBC logo 204x204

Abraham did not achieved justification by working to please God, but by believing God. It was God’s grace through Abraham’s faith that brought about his righteous state… and God purposely did all this, while Abraham was still [gasp!] uncircumcised.

Description:

Avg Guy: When it comes to justification, I have so many questions!

SBC Host: Okay.

Avg Guy: Well, for starters, WHAT IS IT?? … Is it MORE than the removal of sin?… Are we simply pardoned by God? And if so, how can God be JUST if he gives the wicked a pass and declares them as righteous?! Surely THAT would be a travesty of justice!

SBC logo 204x204

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans and shows in our passage that not only does Paul address these questions, but throughout the rest of the book of Romans, he expands upon these truths.

For THIS is the heart of the gospel.

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Key Text: Romans 3:9-20

Description:

Avg Guy: Here’s my take: Man is good… basically. But sometimes there are exceptions where — either because of circumstances or people — he becomes evil.

SBC Host: Interesting, but that’s NOT the Bible’s take.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Romans in which he shows us how the Bible paints a much bleaker picture regarding the human condition. It’s a picture of BAD NEWS: man’s inability to do anything righteous or good.

SBC logo 204x204

But the Bible also proclaims the contrasting GOOD NEWS of the Gospel of Jesus Christ… good news that overwhelms even the sorrowful picture of Romans chapter 3.

Innocent Blood [Matthew 27:1-26; John 3:16]

April 9, 2023

Sermon Notes

Date: 04/09/2023, Easter Sunday

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Matthew 27:1-26; John 3:16

Description:

How can there be some much hatred for the one Man who has never sinned?

This Easter Morning on the Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao focuses on HATE. And causes us to consider its polar opposite: LOVE.

For the trials and crucifixion of Jesus show us no greater example of the extreme chasm of these two words — these two actions — than the love of God and the hatred of men.

Jesus came to save sinners because of the great love of God.

As we look back on this day, it’s hard to imagine how one of His own disciples would betray Him. And how the crowds at His own trial would demand His crucifixion.

SBC logo 204x204

On one hand, we relate. For we have all experienced hate on some level.

…But, if we’re honest, when it comes to wrongdoing, we’re guilty.
