Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 04/24/2022

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Hebrews

Key Text: Hebrews 12:4-11

Description:

“By affliction, He teaches us many precious lessons, which, without it we should never learn. By affliction, He shows us our emptiness and weakness, draws us to the throne of grace, purifies our affections, weans us from the world, and makes us long for heaven. In the resurrection morning, we shall all say, ‘It is good for me that I was afflicted.’ We shall thank God for every storm.”

— JC Ryle

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Hebrews and shows us how our passage this morning is one of the Scriptural foundations for Ryle’s outlook on affliction…

He understood what many of us miss when troubles come our way:

We see our troubles, and we sinfully draw the wrong conclusions.

You Must Know God and the Power of the Resurrection [Philippians 3:4-11]

April 17, 2022

Sermon Notes

Date: 04/04/2021, Easter Sunday

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Philippians 3:4-11

Description:

Filth.

Garbage.

Pile of waste.

Dung.

That’s how Paul described all of his past accomplishments — his background, his accolades, even his religious fervor.

He counted it all rubbish.

Today on this Resurrection Sunday Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao opens the book of Philippians to show us how, when talking about himself, Paul now finds other things of surpassing value: namely, knowing Christ and the power of His resurrection. But…

What does it mean to know Christ?

What does it mean to know the power of His resurrection?

Avg Guy: Jesus.

SBC logo 204x204

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Hebrews and shows us that we ought give thought to this, as Jesus is not only the premier example of godly living… but also of godly suffering.

Fixing Our Eyes Upon Jesus [Hebrews 12:1-2a]

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 04/03/2022

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Hebrews

Key Text: Hebrews 12:1-2a

Description:  Reading through chapter 11 of Hebrews — the Hall of Faith chapter — may seem like a history lesson, but that was not the intent of the writer.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Hebrews in which we begin chapter 12 — a chapter in which the true intent of the Hall of Faith chapter is revealed: encouragement… encouragement to the believer.

SBC logo 204x204

The Christian life is like a race. And our encouragement in this race comes, not only from the throngs of witnesses who have gone before and who live in God’s presence, but most importantly, the greatest encouragement and strength comes from Jesus, Himself, who not only is the supreme example of faith… but faith’s object, author, and finisher.

Trust God, Not Man [Jeremiah 17:5-8]

Sermon Notes

Date: 03/27/2022

Preacher: Josh Peglow, guest preacher

Key Text: Jeremiah 17:5-8

Description:

Thus says the Lord,

Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind

And makes flesh his strength,

And whose heart turns away from the Lord.

For he will be like a bush in the desert

And will not see when prosperity comes,

But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,

A land of salt without inhabitant. [Jeremiah 17:5-6]

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Josh Peglow returns to our pulpit and opens the book of Jeremiah… a book that addresses a point we all struggle with: putting our trust in man versus God.

Why?

Because Jeremiah struggled with it too.

For Jeremiah exhorts that the Lord says:

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord

And whose trust is the Lord.

For he will be like a tree planted by the water,

That extends its roots by a stream

SBC logo 204x204

And will not fear when the heat comes;

But its leaves will be green,

And it will not be anxious in a year of drought

Nor cease to yield fruit. [Jeremiah 17:7-8]

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 03/20/2022

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Hebrews

Key Text: Hebrews 11:39-40

Description:

Avg Guy Sportscaster: [sport theme music] Welcome everybody to the Big Game! We’re in the Hall of Faith where the Old Covenant Saints will face the New Covenant Saints… Who will win?… It’s anybody’s call… should be pretty close.

SBC Host: Hold on! [sport music stops]

Avg Guy Sportscaster: Oh, do you want to be my color commentator?

SBC Host: No! This isn’t a game!!

Avg Guy Sportscaster: Are you kidding me?? This is the game of games! It’s like the “Bible Pro Bowl!”

SBC Host: What?? [Pause. Has an idea.] Wait. Hold on a second…. Keep going and take my opening lines. I need to look up something.

Avg Guy Sportscaster: [sport music resumes] All right!… Today on the Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Game Official and Pastor, Monty Simao, is on the field to continue our study in the book of Hebrews and to oversee these final verses in the Hall of Faith. And like I said, it doesn’t appear that one side has an advantage over the other since both sides of believers — both Old Testament and New Testament — must still look to God in faith.

SBC Host: Okay I’ve got it! Stop the music. [sport music stops] …Ok. While I’m not technically betting here, I’m willing to give up my place in line for common meal and give the advantage to the New Covenant Saints.

SBC logo 204x204

Avg Guy Sportscast: You seem pretty confident there. Do you have some inside information?

SBC Host: Let’s just say that got a tip from the author of Hebrews. And while the Old Covenant Saints are to be revered, [sport music fades back in] the New Covenant Saints have got “something better.”

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Hebrews

Key Text: Hebrews 11:30-38

Description:

SBC Host: If you were going to put a list together of heroes of the faith —real examples of faith — would your list include Samson, Jephthah, and Rahab?

Avg Guy: Are you kidding me?? Samson’s a womanizer. Jephthah — “The King of Rash” — needs to slow down and think before he acts. And Rahab… [whispering] she’s a harlot!!

SBC Host: Yep.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao draws to the end of our Hall of Faith Deep Dive, as we move through the book of Hebrews, and points out that most of us wouldn’t compile a list with those names… and yet, God did.

SBC logo 204x204

And to the degree that we are surprised… is the degree to which we still don’t understand faith.

Avg Guy: oh.

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Key Text: Hebrews 11:27-29

Description:

Avg Guy: Faith prevents the difficulties of life, for a lack of it is sure to bring trials and tribulations.

[sfx: buzzer]

SBC Host: That’s not what the Bible teaches.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Hebrews and our focus on Moses in the Hall of Faith.

Faith looks to God. It doesn’t prevent the difficulties in life, but it does overcome them.

SBC logo 204x204

Often, God uses difficulties to strip away our self-reliance and silence our prideful hearts, and it is in this silence that faith looks to God in trust — knowing that even when we can’t see His hand, we can trust His heart.

Costly Faith [Hebrews 11:23-26]

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 02/27/2022

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Hebrews

Key Text: Hebrews 11:23-26

Description:

[Bible narration of John 15:18ff begins and then drops into the background]: If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you….

The Christian life is often a life of difficulty.  There is a costliness to faith as the world treats Christians harshly just as the world treated Christ.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Hebrews where we come across Moses in the Hall of Faith.

SBC logo 204x204

For you see, faith looks at this life of difficulty and sees a greater reward in following Christ than the reward promised in a life of sin and ease. Faith also sees a loving Father in heaven who has secured a place with Him in eternal glory.

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: The Church: Communion

Key Text: selected

Description:

BREAKING NEWS:  For the first time in its 93 year history, Scandia Bible Church will break with its long-standing tradition of observing communion on the first Sunday of each month… and instead, will celebrate communion each and every week.

Today on the Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao preaches a special sermon to unpack this major and historical decision.

Simao preaches that while coming to the Lord’s Table weekly is certainly not a command we find in Scripture, we do find it to be the normative practice of the early Church

SBC logo 204x204

Simao clip: “It was such a central act that the Church could be said to gather for THAT purpose.”

— centering the service upon the finished work of Christ.

All fun aside… this is a BIG DEAL — one we should welcome, and not take lightly.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Hebrew’s Hall of Faith in which the spotlight is, once again, for Abraham.

But for us — we have questions:

How does faith overcome the natural objections that must arise from a such horrific command?

How does faith pass a test, such as this, given by God?

And how does Abraham’s example of his undeniable willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, point to the promise of God for all believers?

Sermon Notes

Preacher: Josh Peglow, guest preacher

Key Text: Luke 10:38-42

Description:

[Cell phone ringing]

Avg Guy: I don’t have time to talk to anybody!… Quick! Answer this for me.

SBC Host: Hello. Average Guy’s phone.

[garbled phone voice]

SBC Host: It’s Jesus.

Avg Guy: Tell Him I’m too busy.

Are you too busy to hear from Christ?

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Josh Peglow fills in at the pulpit and preaches through the familiar account of Mary and Martha.

Recall that Mary was the attentive one — the one who set everything aside, and sat at her Lord’s feet, to hear from Him.

Martha was the busy one, filled with overwhelm and a touch of sister-directed resentment, scurrying about to serve Him.

SBC logo 204x204

It’s easy for us to read this passage and assign misdirected priority and attention onto Martha. But this ultimately isn’t about what Martha should or shouldn’t have done: it’s about what you… and what you would do.

For there is no greater priority in the Christian life than hearing from Christ.

Description:

She’s wife to “The Father of all who believe,” but she doesn’t share the same stellar reputation. [sfx: laugh of unbelief]

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Hebrews where we are focusing on the heroes that adorn the “Hall of Faith”.

…And when we hear that Sarah made the cut, we too are tempted to laugh. For we remember in the book of Genesis that the aged Sarah laughed in unbelief when God told her husband, Abraham, that she would soon have a son.

And yet, the book of Hebrews remembers Sarah DIFFERENTLY — as one who believed God.

Certainly, this obvious contradiction must be due to some sort of oversight!

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 01/02/2022

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Advent

Key Text: Isaiah 9:1-7; Luke 1:26-38

Description:

The angel, Gabriel, was God’s messenger.

For God had a message that would not only break 400 years of His silence, but would announce the birth of two sons: John and Jesus — the Baptizer and the Christ.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues in his Advent series this season, further telling us about the greatest miracle of all: the birth of Jesus.

John the Baptist played a crucial part, though, for he was sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus. And while the story of Jesus’ birth is one that we are all familiar with, what we can often miss is that every aspect, of this story we know so well, is rooted in the prophesies of God concerning the Messiah.

And Jesus fulfilled them all.

To Prepare the Way [Luke 1:1-25]

December 19, 2021

Monty Simao 2014Sermon Notes

Date: 12/19/2021

Preacher: Monty Simao, pastor

Series: Advent

Key Text: Luke 1:1-25

Description:

God had not spoken to His people for over 400 years.  It was a long time of silence and in that time, Israel had returned from exile, rebuilt the temple, survived Alexander the Great, and now was occupied by Rome.  Many were discouraged and there were a host of ways in which the people responded. It was rough.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao opens the Bible this advent season to tell us of a pivotal moment in all of time:

God was going to break His silence.

Affliction and The End of Ourselves [2 Corinthians 1:8-11]

December 12, 2021

SBC frame line - current sermons

Sermon Notes

Date: 12/12/2021

Preacher: Josh Peglow, guest preacher

Key Text: 2 Corinthians 1:8-11

Description:

[Writing Vignette]

SBC Host: [writing] Dear family and friends. What a year it has been! Billy is growing up so fast. He started soccer and singing in the choir. Sally — not to be outdone — has taken up ballet, and found that she, too, enjoys singing. Of course, we all felt the bump in the road when our family suffered an affliction that was so great that it caused us the despair of life. We enjoyed our annual family vacation, though, down at the lake this summer….

Avg Guy: Whoah!! Wait! What happened!? “The despair of life”???

You can’t just gloss over something like that. You need to give us details!

SBC Host: Why? In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul didn’t.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Josh Peglow fills in at the pulpit and preaches out of the book of 2 Corinthians to show us that God uses trials to cause his people to stop trusting in themselves and, instead, in Him alone.

It’s not that he doesn’t want us to communicate our needs with others — He does. After all, it’s part of His plan of how we support each other.

But the main thrust of what we’ll learn today is that while we can suffer for all sorts of different reasons — and we will — (even a great apostle, such as Paul, is not immune) it’s when the despair becomes so great, that we humbly face the reality that, in and of ourselves, we have nothing to give.

SBC logo 204x204

Our burden is so excessive that we are beyond our strength.

While this can be a disconcerting place to be… It’s a good place to be.

Because as we put our trust and reliance in Him, we see God go to work… to establish His glory.
