that earthly treasure can have upon the human heart.

For what if, in gaining everything
this world has to offer,
you lose sight of what matters most?

Jesus teaches us that no one can serve two masters.

And He warns that where our treasure is,
our hearts will follow.

Yet Christ offers riches
that wealth can never purchase —

the enduring riches of God’s grace.

The question, then, is not simply
what you possess…

but what possesses you?

The Heart of the Gospel [Galatians 2:8-10]

But when the pressure came,
his actions told a different story.

the very gospel he professes.

And in that confrontation,
Paul exposes a danger
that still threatens the church today.

The temptation to measure our standing
before God — and one another —
by something other than Christ.

But the gospel leaves no room
for a righteousness of our own.

We are justified through faith in Christ,
not by works of the law.

And those who have received this grace
are called to walk
in step with its truth.

where almost every appetite
can be satisfied on demand.

We eat when we’re not hungry.
We consume without thinking.
And yet, somehow —
we’re never quite satisfied.

in the Gospel of Matthew —

as Jesus turns our attention
to the often-neglected discipline
of fasting.

But fasting is not about
earning favor with God.

For Christ has already accomplished
what our self-denial never could.

not a means of proving our righteousness,
but an expression of our longing —

for the Bridegroom who has come,
and the heavenly banquet
that is yet to come.

What place do good works
have in the Christian life?

Do they save us?

Do they make us acceptable to God?

Or do they belong to something
God has already done?

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast,
Pastor David Teves brings us to a passage in Ephesians
that leaves no room for confusion.

We are saved by grace,
through faith —

not as a result of works.

And yet the same grace that saves us
does not leave us with nothing to do.

For we are God’s workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus
for good works —

works that God Himself
prepared beforehand.

So the question is not
whether our works can save us.

They cannot.

The question is:

Having been saved by Christ,
what has He given us to do?

more challenging
and more unnatural
to the human heart than this:
“Love your enemies,
and pray for those who persecute you.”

as Jesus brings His exposition of the Law
to its staggering climax.

The world loves those
who love in return.

But kingdom citizens are called
to something wholly different:

to reflect their Father,
who sends sun and rain
upon the righteous
and the unrighteous alike.

And when Jesus commands,
“Be perfect,”

He strips away every claim
to self-righteousness
and drives us to the Savior —

who loved us
while we were His enemies,

and now, by His Spirit,
empowers us to love ours.

An eye for an eye,
and a tooth for a tooth.

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast,

as Jesus confronts
the desire for personal vengeance.

God gave this law
to restrain retaliation
and uphold justice.

But the scribes and Pharisees
turned it into permission
to get even.

Christ calls the citizens
of His kingdom
to another way:

turn the other cheek,
walk the second mile,
and willingly surrender
what you have every right to claim.

Not because justice
doesn’t matter,

but because vengeance
belongs to God.

And because the King Himself
surrendered His rights,
and bore the judgment we deserved…

and freed us
from the burden
of getting even.

the promises we make,
the words we manipulate,
and the loopholes we use
to excuse deception.

The Pharisees had built
a system of oaths
that sounded righteous

while leaving room
to lie.

And their loopholes expose
the same impulse in us —

to shape the truth
to serve ourselves.

But every word is spoken
before the sovereign God.

The Law leaves us
without excuse

and drives us
to the Lord of Truth —

the One whose perfect obedience
is counted as ours,

and whose every word
was true —

and remains
forever true.

The King presses the seventh commandment
beyond outward restraint

under the holy authority
of the One who made it.

Because in Christ’s kingdom,
purity is not a mask we wear.

It is a grace we need —

given by the faithful Husband
who forgives,

and restores.

“You shall not murder.”

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast,
Pastor Monty Simao continues our study
in the Gospel of Matthew —

as Jesus takes up a commandment
everyone thought they understood —

murder.

But Jesus shows us that murder
is more than an outward act.

He reveals where it really lives —

in the heart,

where we find anger,
contempt,
and the careless words
we use to dismiss others.

And suddenly,
murder is not something
safely outside us.

Because apart from Christ,
it lives within us.

Our problem is deeper
than behavior to be managed.
It is a heart
that needs to be made clean.

And no amount of external righteousness
can do that.

Because before the King,
the Law exposes our need,
and drives us to Christ —

the One who yielded His rights,
stood in our place,
and paid our debt…
to the last penny.

Avg Guy: And Jesus says our righteousness has to exceed theirs to enter the kingdom.

SBC Host: Yes.

Avg Guy: So I just need to try harder than a Pharisee… and I’m in!

SBC Host: Not exactly.

in the Gospel of Matthew —

as Jesus corrects
that misunderstanding.

For Jesus did not come
to abolish the Law or the Prophets.

He came to fulfill them.

The kingdom
does not make righteousness smaller.

It exposes lawlessness
treating God’s commands lightly,

and outward religion
that cannot make sinners clean.

The righteousness that enters the kingdom
is found first
in the King who fulfilled the Law —

and by grace,
bears fruit
in His people.

The Gospel Prevails [Galatians 2:1-10]

The gospel was on the line.

Not preference.
Not tradition.

But salvation itself.

where Paul recounts his visit to Jerusalem
with Barnabas and Titus.

And there, the question becomes unavoidable:

Is Christ enough?

Must circumcision be added?
Must works of the law be required?
Must anything stand beside the finished work of Christ?

Paul’s answer is clear.

He would not yield.
Not even for a moment.

Because to add to the gospel
is to lose the gospel.

Titus stood as living proof:

Salvation is not by works of the law,
but by faith in Christ.

The gospel is enough.

And because it is enough—
we stand firm.

Paul was not shaped by the message he preached—
he was overturned by it.

For only God’s grace

but by divine power.

The gospel doesn’t merely inform us.
It transforms us.

And in the end,
there is but one response:

…The desire to share in a sense of accomplishment by adding to our salvation — even validating it — is real.

where the Apostle Paul tells us not only that we don’t need to… but not to.

In fact, he issues some of the strongest warnings in all of Scripture:

The moment we add our work to His, the Gospel is corrupt.

but in what Christ has done.
