We cannot find the words to express the overwhelming love and gratitude we feel toward each of you in your outpouring of love and support to our family. God is truly upholding each of us by His Word and His Spirit and through the heartfelt cries of His people. Thank you for weeping with us, for your continual prayers, your hugs from both near and far, and your beautiful notes of encouragement and all the ways you have reached out to meet our family’s physical needs at this time.
Description: Psalm 119. It’s not a Psalm we usually go to when looking for comfort, but, ironically, it has more to say about comfort and affliction than any other Psalm.
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues to preach in the aftermath of his son’s tragic death and points out that when you see a passage of affliction in the Bible, take heart in knowing that you are not far from comfort — for this pattern, of passages of comfort following passages of affliction, occurs over and over again… in almost every instance. God is the God of all comfort, and He comforts the afflicted.
When it comes to Psalm 119, we often categorize it as a Psalm about the beauty of God’s word and statutes, but what we’ll find is that, consequently, it is also a Psalm about God’s great comfort.
Description: How is it that the Christian can be devastated and yet hopeful at the same time? How is it that at the point when we are weakest is also the point at which we are strongest?
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao preaches in the aftermath of losing his son to a brutal horseriding accident and shows us, in the midst of that, that the Apostle Paul answers these questions in the book of 2 Corinthians; and within it we find more beauty in the Gospel for it is Good News even in times like this.
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Elder Keith Barker points out that many people — both today and in the days that Jesus walked the earth — believe that they are living lives in a manner pleasing to God. …But if Jesus were to come to your house for dinner, would He commend you or correct you? For the Pharisees of Jesus’ time, because they led such extremely disciplined lifestyles, their answer (at least for them) would be obvious. In today’s message we’re privy to such a dinner conversation, in which the Lord brings these very religious men face to face with the Truth.
Description: It’s one of the ugliest chapters in the first book of Bible, and yet God sometimes uses negative examples to teach.
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis where we witness humanity’s stench of sin open for inspection in chapter 34. For in this passage we are reminded that even the patriarchs failed and compromised, and that, shamefully, as it happened, the sons of Israel missed the beauty of the covenant that was right before them – turning, instead, what God called sacred into what could only be described as savage.
Scandia Host: Imagine for a moment that the last time you saw your brother he was trying to kill you, and now you find out he is headed your way with 400 men. What would you do in this situation?
Average Guy:Ahhh, “Beam me up Scotty?”
Scandia Host: Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis where we find that this is the exact scenario Jacob is facing.
Average Guy:What is he going to do???
Scandia Host: Well, you’ll have to listen to the message, but I’ll tell you this: his actions may surprise you.
Description: On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther took out a hammer and nailed 95 theses to the castle church door in Wittenberg – an act that would catalyze debate and usher in radical change in the church.
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao takes a moment to recognize this significant milestone in church history: the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Indeed, the reformers of yesteryear have left us with a great body of knowledge about God and the church and the state of man; but it leaves us wondering if any tasks remain. Is there anything left for us to do?
Description: It’s difficult sometimes to say “no” to an obvious need. But we must remember that needs are never calls. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Elder Keith Barker opens the book of Exodus to remind us that our strength comes from the Lord. We are to draw our strength only from Him… not ourselves. For when we depend upon our own humanity to energize and power us, we surely cascade to destruction. No, a need – in and of itself – is not a call; rather, a call is something that comes from God… to meet a need.
Wrestling Announcer:Get ready because the BWF Sunday Morning Main Event is on! This morning on the Bible Wresting Federation, we witness the guy who knows how to make a mean pot of stew, make your head spin talking speckled sheep, and work as long as it takes to get the wife he wants: Jacob the Deceiver… squaring off with the Great I Am; the Almighty, Awesome Creator of the Heavens and Earth: GOD!
Average Guy:God is so going to win!
Scandia Host: Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis to recount the second time God appears in the flesh: the first, to talk with Abraham; the second, to wrestle with Jacob.
Average Guy:I told you God was going to win.
Scandia Host: You’re right. God was merciful, though, because Jacob got to limp away from this match with only a dislocated hip. But this wasn’t about wrestling – this was a lesson. You see, in this scuffle, God was teaching Jacob something about strife and struggle… and how in those situations THE BEST response (for him and for us) is to simply cling to the Lord.
Twenty years of separation and animosity. How do you make it right?
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and shows us that in Jacob’s case, he planned, he prayed, …and he did them both in humility.
Description: Mizpah. In Christian circles today, when you hear this word it’s often associated with little coins or trinkets – jewelry in essence – that people buy to show their prayer for protection over another. They can even be seen by some as romantic. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis to show us that this is NOT how Mizpah was utilized in the Bible… in fact, it was quite the opposite.
Description: The late preacher A.W. Tozer once wrote:
”What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Elder Keith Barker parks on this concept by opening the book of Isaiah. What about you? …Have you ever reflected on this? What’s your concept of God?
Description: Have you ever been glued to the television watching a high-speed chase of cops and robbers? No doubt, this modern phenomena has captured us all at some point. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis to show us a high-speed chase “Old Testament style” – complete with flocks and herds, an angry posse, false god, and a thieving woman on a camel. What more could you ask for?
Description: There are times in our lives when God, through His grace, will change our affections toward a particular situation to prepare our hearts for a difficult decision. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis to show us how the Lord did this very thing in the lives of Jacob and his wives. The circumstance: difficult relations with Laban, Jacob’s father-in-law. The result: Jacob decides to leave Haran and head back to the Land of Promise; and in that we see the rise of the new Patriarch of the Faith as he steps toward Canaan and fills the shoes of his father Isaac.
Description: Isn’t interesting… that when things go wrong, it’s easy for us to place the blame on God; but when things go well, we’re quick to take the credit and praise ourselves. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and shows us that Jacob learned the incredibly difficult lesson that all things come from the Lord, and it is God alone who brings the increase… And God alone who is sovereign over all the affairs of men.
Description: Sometimes we come across portions of the Bible that hard to believe were ever recorded… portions that read more like “Daytime Television” would. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and moves us through a section that would be more at home in the tabloids and gossip rags than would seem to fit with Holy Writ… and yet God is bringing about His promises in the midst of a sinful fiasco, and behind all the ugliness there is a purpose.
“How’s a person supposed to make good decisions!?? I’m trying my best… but a little help from Jesus would be nice.”
Many Christians have little to no confidence that they have Jesus overseeing their daily activities – the result, they make decisions which are contrary to a life of peace. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Elder Keith Barker opens the Bible to the well-known Psalm 23, where we learn that, indeed, we are like sheep… often wanting our own way even when it’s the wrong way. But what we learn from God’s Word is that we can at any time ask for wisdom, and He promises to guide and provide… just like a good shepherd.
Description: The “School of Hard Knocks” – a school that no one would voluntarily enroll… But sometimes God has other plans. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and shows us that oftentimes God uses trials and difficulties to grow and sanctify us – especially when our lives pattern that of Jacob: lives governed by worship of self and deceit. Yes…
When it comes to the School of Hard Knocks, we may desire to skip, but God ensures we attend.
…if for no other purpose than to build our character and faith in Him alone.
Description: His bags were packed, and he had left for Haran to secure a wife; but what Jacob didn’t know was that God was already ahead of him to secure his heart. Yes…
Jacob was on “Operation Wife,” but God was on “Operation Jacob.”
Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and shows us that some of the most difficult things we go through in life are but the hand of God molding us into the person He wants us to be: sanctifying us as He removes the chaff.
Description: The story of Jacob’s ladder has captured the attention of generations of people far and wide, as we hear in popular music and in church Sunday Schools across America…. yet the real meaning and significance of Jacob’s vision has largely remained unknown. Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast, Pastor Monty Simao continues with our study in the book of Genesis and shows us that in the New Testament, Jesus, Himself, tells us that He is the promise of Jacob’s Ladder and the only gate to heaven… And the only one who makes God to dwell with man.
