in the Gospel of Matthew —

as Jesus teaches His disciples
not merely how to pray,

[Give us this day our daily bread.]

but how to live each day

[Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.]

in complete dependence
upon their Father in heaven —

[And do not lead us into temptation.]

These are not the prayers
of the self-sufficient.

They are the petitions of children
who know the Father —

the One who provides,
forgives,
and faithfully guards them
when temptation comes.

Saved to Serve [Ephesians 2:8-10]

have in the Christian life?

Do they save us?

Do they make us acceptable to God?

Or do they belong to something
God has already done?

Today on Scandia Bible Church Podcast,
Pastor David Teves brings us to a passage in Ephesians
that leaves no room for confusion.

We are saved by grace,
through faith —

not as a result of works.

And yet the same grace that saves us
does not leave us with nothing to do.

For we are God’s workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus
for good works —

works that God Himself
prepared beforehand.

So the question is not
whether our works can save us.

They cannot.

The question is:

Having been saved by Christ,
what has He given us to do?

of the the sheep they are called to lead?

Scripture gives shepherds
a solemn charge.

They are called to watch over souls
as men who will one day
give an account.

But no pastor is the chief shepherd
of Christ’s church.

For every faithful shepherd
serves under a Shepherd
greater than himself —

the Great Shepherd,
Jesus Christ.
